Santa Clara - Other Cities and Attractions

Basic Information
Area: 8,662 sq. km
Capital: Santa Clara
Population: 825,800

It is one of the central provinces in the Island, located at the north of Cienfuegos, with an exit to the Atlantic Ocean. Their coasts, to the north, allow that the warm and affectionate Atlantic Ocean sigh in 4 beaches; El Salto, Cataratas, Isabela and Caibarien.

Santa Clara, the capital of the province, was founded in 1689 by settlers from Remedios looking for a site inland that would be less vulnerable to pirate attack. Heading east from Havana, Santa Clara marks the start of Cuba's central region. The city is strategically located on the island's spine, right on the main highway and train lines. Santa Clara has many places of historic and cultural interest, and the people who live here are noted for their hospitality.

Villa ClaraUp until a few years ago, Villa Clara was virtually unknown as a tourist resort, visited only by tour groups which stayed a day or so to visit the Memorial to Ernesto Che Guevara or to discover some of the other enchantments of this province in the middle of the country.

The construction of a stone causeway linking the territory with Santa María Cay, a tiny islet just 13 km long and about 2 km wide, changed all this. Santa María has an excellent beach and fascinating land and sea flora and fauna, which makes it a marvelous place for scuba diving.

The northeastern part of the province also includes Ensenacho and Las Brujas (Witches) Cays.
The town of San Juan de los Remedios, whose historic center has been declared a national monument, is just over 60 km from Santa María Cay.
Part of the Escambray Mountains is in this province, which makes Villa Clara one of the best places in the country for ecotourism. In addition, the thermal and medicinal mineral baths at Elguea Spa will help to improve your health.

Villa Clara Province is the second largest producer of sugar in Cuba, with other crops, particularly tobacco, playing an important part in the local economy. In the south, the mountain resort of Hanabanilla in the Escambray Mountains is being primed for tourism. It is this area's natural beauty which holds most appeal to the visitor.
