San Antonio de los Baños

La Habana - Artemisa

San Antonio de los BañosIn San Antonio de los Baños cultural life is quite intense. Its inhabitants treasure testimonies of the long life of graphic humor in Cuba, a genre that has much to do with the idiosyncrasy of the Cuban, joyful and enterprising. San Antonio is famous for its ‘Festival of Humor’ in April and there is even a ‘Museo del Humor’ in an old colonial house.

The Ariguanabo River and the weeping-willow that stands by its waters have been a recurrent motif of inspiration for composers and poets. Hailing from this region, singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez proclaims in his songs the pride he feels for his rural origins, which add freshness and spontaneity to his music. There is located also the International School of Cinema, where young students from all over the globe are having colleges.

Symbol of this town is ‘El Bobo’ (the fool), a cartoon by Eduardo Abela. It was a protest cartoon in the Batista years.
