La Habana has some interesting caverns, which are worth a visit when you're in the neighborhood.
Cueva de García Robiou
It is a cave of great significance in terms of cave drawings in Güines. There are indigenous drawings with a lineal geometric style, which allow recognizing animals like frogs and fish. It has 7 pictographies, although No. 15 is the most remarkable one since it is a mural of 2 m wide and 1 m high.
Cave of Jivaro Dugs
The cave has eye-shaped pictographies and funeral bundles. Dr. Antonio Nuñez Jiménez explored it recently and found a container of strombus.
Cueva de la Palma
This cave in Güines has anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and castl-shaped pictographies representing groups of eagles. They were made by using the charcoal technique.
Cave of Water and Cave of Bone
The Cave of Water and the Cave of Bone form the managuaco archeological site. The ceiling at the entrance of the Cave of Water has a calcareous formation that is called anemophilous (3.5 m), being the biggest in Havana Province. It is important from the archeological point of view because there are aboriginal and colonial traces.
El Aquacate Cave
It is formed by a very low gallery with stalactites and columns. Its 7 pictographies, like those of Guara locality, represent stylized hunters, quadrupeds of great size which are also stylized, horizontal lines and concentric circles.
Cueva de la Candela
This cave in Güines has a great scientific and historical value. In 1804, the wise German Alexander von Humboldt explored the area. On April 4, 1939, the speleological association was founded in such place.
Los Matojos Cave
It has painted in black to scenes drawn in 2 levels. They are 2 anthropomorphic figures carrying in their arms hunting objects. The lower drawing represents a profile of a big animal. Very close to these drawings, there is a small arrow; pictography 3, within a gallery of pictography 4 made by 17 concentric circles.
The Bull Cave
There are 4 pictographies that represent hunting scenes, with stylized anthropomorphic figures. One of them has a bow in its right arm. The pictographic complex number 4 made up by the 3 figures.
The Cave of the Dead
There are 9 pictographies in the cave or a complex of them, which are formed by net-shaped figures; others represent double circles with a cross inside, and there is also a series of 4 concentric circles and 2 anthropomorphic figures. Next to one of them, there are 2 long figures with different horizontal lines similar to little pines or conifers.
The Jia Cave The cave is in a grotto that has a passage of 7 m wide and 6 m deep with bell-shaped formations. Only one net-shaped pictography has been discovered in it.
